"It's a dangerous world for a woman..."

I’ve been a solo female traveler for nearly 6 months, before I left, people told me I was crazy.

It is too dangerous for women to travel alone - especially in South America.

What a lot of men don’t realise is, it’s “dangerous" for a women to do a lot of things…

- Walk alone at night

- Smile at the wrong person in a bar

- Wear a revealing top

- Not have children/get married before 30

- Have a child

- Ask for a pay rise

- Share your opinion

- Go for drinks/dinner/lunch/coffee with a potential male client or colleague

The majority of males do not think twice about lot of these things.

The generations before us were brought up differently, their access to information was limited.

In a modern western world we are lucky enough to have access to information, role models and movements that help empower us to want & do more as women.

For some of us it may be unlearning a lot of the things we were brought up to believe, things that family & friends may have told us we should, shouldn’t, could or couldn’t do.

If I’ve learnt one thing over the past 6 months, it’s the importance of conversation, education and using the voice you have.

Visiting places where women do not have the ability to do any of those things, it is our job to do so wherever we can.

Today, make a conscious effort to start:

  • Talking openly about your wage with your girlfriends

  • Sharing experiences you’ve had, or limitations you've faced

  • Make periods normal - stop hiding tampons & pads deep in your bag or at the bottom of your shopping carts

  • Empower each other to dream bigger and take the time to support each other

  • Seek out female leaders in your professional development - last year I realised 95% of the marketing leaders I was learning from & looking up to were male...not because there were no great females, but because all my algorithm fed me at the time were the males - I now make a conscious effort to diversify the content I consume.

  • Stop supporting magazines, online publications, social media pages that set us back 50 years - no matter how "click-worthy" the title is. Engaging in it even negatively is support.

Every tiny step we make, not only helps moves us forward, but it helps women today, but girls of the future and the women who do not have the privilege we do.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY TO ALL OF THE AMAZING WOMEN OUT THERE.

You CAN do it all.

You ARE enough.

You DO deserve it!
